All You Need to Know About Needles

Learn Basic Lining and Shading

The Quelle Round Needles are utilized for detailing, thicker lining, and specialized work that allows immense showcase of artist technique.

These are created in a flower-like design that is connected around a center shaft for creating a round pattern. Needles that are packed closely are called Round Liners (RL) which are useful for lining your tattoo.

Round Shaders (RS) are loosely stacked needles around the shaft which are useful to fill in small areas with color, shade, and blend after the outlining is done. Medium Taper RS typically used for color work, allows more needle contact with skin to inject more pigment whilst Long Taper RS are typically used for black & grey work allowing more time on skin with less trauma.

Softer Edges for Filling and Shading

Our Quelle Magnum Needles (or Mags) that is preferred by more renowned artists to date are curved in a quarter moon shape which are less traumatic to the skin in comparison with straight magnum needles. They are made of high quality steel. Solder for soldering contains silver which prevents oxidation processes when working with pigments.

NEW Magnum Needles puncture the skin more evenly so your tattoos look better. Magnums are used for filling in color, blending, and shading a tattoo after the outline is done. Once stacked it allows you to blend, shade, and fill in a large tattoo area effortlessly.

Clearer, Darker Lines with One Stroke

The flat needles that artists prefer for lining due to its shape that allows more ink delivery to the skin are stacked in a straight line and is being used for geometric shapes. They have a very tight soldering that almost freely penetrate into the skin due to its sharpening and the elongated type makes the lines more defined in a single stroke.

These needles are closely welded in a row of which each kick the machine makes leave several points at the same time. Flat shaders are best used to areas that require curvature, such as hair. They can be angled to curve in a swooping line to give the illusion of flowing hair, water, or wind.

Smoother Gradient Work

The Quelle Bugpin Needles are described as anything smaller than your standard and magnum needles made with extremely thinner needles that allows smoother gradient and finer end-results. Standard needles are generally between 0.30mm and 0.35mm thick while Bugpin needles are between 0.20mm and 0.25mm that does a better job when shadings matter the most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the needles pre-sterilized?

Yes. All of Quelle needles are individually packed, labeled as sterile, marked with numbers and expiration date.

Does this work with any machine?

Yes. You just have to make sure it’s in a standard set-up grouping if you aren’t using a cartridge machine. Inspect everything to make sure you have the right parts to make it work.

What is the needle code?

The initial 2 digits speak to the diameter of the tattoo needles in the grouping, the second 2 digits speak to the number of needles in the grouping, and the letters toward the end describe the type of needle grouping.

In this example, in our 1007RL model, we're discussing a group of 7 #10-diameter (Bugpin 0.35mm) tattoo needles in a round liner grouping. This item may be called #10 7-Round Liner Tattoo Needles.

Tattoo needles counts and grouping?

The next two digits in a code like 1204RL refer to the number of needles in the grouping. So in our example, 04 means there are 4 #12-diameter(Standard) needles grouped together. The way they're grouped is defined by the letters at the end of the code. RL = Round Liner, which means they're tattoo needles meant for lining work that are grouped in a circle.

How to use a Tattoo Needle?

So how to use tattoo needles like rounds, magnums and curved magnums? Rounds are quite straight forward. The larger the area of coverage, the larger count needle you would use. For thicker lines, use a larger count round liner. Pigment dispersion using a magnum is smoother than rounds. A good comparison would be a round liner is a pen while a magnum is a magic marker. Proper use of a magnum takes a bit of practice.

The magnum should always hit the skin at an angle. If it goes in straight and not at an angle it will stick into the skin which will cause the needle to jump. Always drag the magnum across the skin by pulling it across. Do not push forward as this will cause the magnum to dig into the skin causing pain and getting the needle caught. Color in a circular motion, a magnum, being wider, will cover more area faster than a conventional round. Wipe the skin often so you can pay attention to the texture while you are using a magnum.
